The Taft Altarpiece
It all started when I was looking at the Ghent Altarpiece, painted in the 15th Century by Hubert and Jan van Eyck in St. Bavo’s Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium, and thought I could paint an altarpiece too, and so I did.
I was living in Taft, California, at the time and had an art gallery there called The End of Times Gallery, which also served as my studio, and so I had plenty of space in which to work. Nevertheless, I realized that if I worked on a single surface, the painting might prove to be too unwieldy and so I divided the work into what came to be seventeen panels, some large and some small.
